应我校地球科学与资源学院构造地质教研室的邀请,英国伦敦大学学院教授Peiter Vermeesch教授和中国地质科学院地质研究所Marie-Luce Chevalier研究员将来我校进行学术交流,并在“岩石圈构造与地球动力学研讨会”作学术报告。 报告题目:What (not) to do with "bad" data, using examples from thermochronology 报告时间:2023年11月20日下午4-5点 报告人:Peiter Vermeesch教授 报告题目:What can past earthquakes teach us about future ones - Example of the Xianshuihe fault, eastern Tibet 报告时间:2023年11月20日下午5-6点 报告人:Marie-Luce Chevalier(马晓丽) 报告地点:逸夫楼901 报告人简介:Peiter Vermeesch是英国伦敦大学学院教授,分别在比利时根特大学、麻省理工学院、斯坦福大学获得学士、硕士、博士学位;先后在苏黎世联邦理工和伦敦大学学院任职助理研究员、讲师和教授。主要从事地质年代学、热年代学、地质学与统计学交叉领域的研究。研究成果引领了国际地质年代学领域的发展,多次获邀在AGU、EGU等国际学术会议上做特邀报告。获得了玛丽居里基金、英国科学研究理事会、英国自然环境研究理事会、欧洲研究委员会等多个项目资助。在Nature Geosciences、EPSL、GRL、JGR、ESR等国际著名刊物发表第一作者论文30余篇,共同作者论文50余篇。获得2023年国际数学地质学会费利克斯·查耶斯奖(Felix Chayes Prize)、Birkbeck大学卓越教学奖、Birkbeck大学罗纳德·特雷斯研究奖(Ronald Tress research prize)。 报告内容简介:The most precise and accurate geochronological results are obtained when multiple aliquots of the same sample yield consistent dates. By convention, "consistency" is defined as the "mean square of the weighted deviates" (MSWD). There is a widespread belief within the geoscience community that low MSWD values are "good" and high MSWD values are "bad". Using a meta-analysis of nearly 1000 MSWD values obtained from the geological literature, he will prove that geologists' attitude towards high MSWD values causes them to "cherry pick" data. This means that they remove perceived "outliers" until the MSWD is acceptably low. I will show that the distribution of the MSWD-values in the geological literature is "too good to be true". European, American, Chinese and other geologists are equally guilty of cherry picking. Cherry picking is harmful. It reduces accuracy and discards potentially valuable geological information. The cherry-picking problem can be solved by (1) abandoning the notion that high MSWD values are bad and quantifying dispersion instead of discarding it; and (2) sharing raw data in full transparency. In the context of fission track thermochronology, the second point is accommodated by an online tool called geochron@home, which serves both as an archive of raw fission track data, and as a crowd-sourcing app, which the reader of this abstract is invited to participate in, at https://isoplotr.es.ucl.ac.uk/geochron@home/ftc 报告人简介:Marie-Luce Chevalier(马晓丽)是中国地质科学院地质研究所研究员,分别获得了比利时列日大学物理学学士学位、法国巴黎地球物理学院地球物理学硕士学位、构造地貌学博士学位,并在斯坦福大学从事了博士后研究。主要从事青藏高原活动构造和构造气候研究。以高原内部和周缘大型活动断裂为研究对象,通过野外地质调查、遥感观测、无人机影像、激光扫描雷达和宇宙成因核素测年等方法,探究青藏高原大型活动断裂几何学、运动学、动力学与地震危险性,并将古气候与活动构造相结合,重新约束高原内部末次冰期季风降水的界限。2020年获得了中国地质学会“黄汲青青年地质科学技术奖”,2021年获得了中国政府颁发的“中国政府友谊奖”,2022年获得了法国教育部颁发的“法国国家棕榈骑士勋章”。先后主持国家自然科学基金重点国际(地区)合作与交流项目1项、面上项目2项、川藏铁路专题研究1项、中比国际合作项目1项,科技部重点研发项目1项,并在2023年荣获国家杰出青年科学基金项目资助,成为国家自然科学基金委地学部首位外籍“杰青”获得者。 报告内容简介:Large earthquakes frequently occur on and around the Tibetan Plateau, which is dissected by numerous large active faults. Studying earthquakes behavior right after they happen (by mapping co-seismic rupture and measuring co-seismic offsets), as well as studying the long term behavior of these active faults along which earthquakes occur, at time scales of a few thousand years using lacustrine paleoseismology, or tens of thousands of years using tectonic-geormorphology approaches (by dating offset geomorphic surfaces such as river terraces or moraines that are offset by the faults), allow to infer where and when the next large earthquake may strike. Here, I introduce one of the most active faults in China, and maybe in the world, the Xianshuihe fault system in the eastern Tibetan Plateau, along which one earthquake of M>7 occurs every 35 years on average, and how our research allowed to predict the 5th September 2022 Luding earthquake south of Kangding. “岩石圈构造与地球动力学研讨会”简介:自1988年起,中国地质大学(北京)地球科学与资源学院构造地质教研室联合多家兄弟单位组织了“理论与应用构造地质研讨会”。后经马杏垣院士提议,更名为“构造地质研讨会”。至1994年,构造地质教研室牵头组建了地矿部岩石圈构造与动力学开放研究实验室。根据当时构造地质学科负责人和王鸿祯院士的意见,决定将研讨会更名为“地球动力学研讨会”。该研讨会一直持续到2013年。平等自由的学术讨论,不同学派的思想碰撞,形成了百家争鸣、百花齐放的学术氛围,成为了当时我国构造地质学和地球动力学学术交流的稳定平台。经构造地质教研室例会讨论,一致认为应该继续开展该系列研讨会,并将其名称改为“岩石圈构造与地球动力学研讨会”。为了更好地满足学术需求,该研讨会设置学术报告和写作交流两个不同模块。 欢迎广大师生参加,研究生记学术报告一次!
